Tennis Elbow is caused by increased stress to the tendon that connects the elbow and upper arm to the muscles in the wrist and hand (known as the common extensor tendon). Repetitive motions, such as elbow extension and heavy gripping, are often the source of this stress on the common extensor tendon.
Common Signs & Symptoms:
- Pain on the outside of the elbow
- Pain when gripping
- Pain-limited weakness
- Difficulty opening items such as jars
- Difficulty shaking hands
How Will Physical Therapy or Occupational Therapy Help?
During Physical/Occupational Therapy sessions for tennis elbow, you will:
- Work on pain management through the use of ice and heat, soft tissue mobilization, and taping or bracing.
- Strengthen the muscles that attach to the elbow for correct positioning and arm movements.
- Restore mobility by lengthening the tendons in the arm to decrease pain and stiffness.
- Learn joint protection strategies, modifications to everyday activities, and exercises you can do at home.
