Spear Sports Residency Program

The mission of Spear Sports Residency is to provide a quality advanced curriculum to sport physical therapists to guide them to achieve the level of a Sports Clinical Specialist in critical analysis, patient management, communication, and professionalism to enhance patient care to the population served. The program is dedicated to guiding growth, continuous improvement, and strategic initiatives.

 

 

Program General Information:
The Sports residency program will last approximately 13-months, full time, clinically based program to enhance the clinical reasoning and advance skills of the resident. The program offers a comprehensive curriculum that meets the minimum required hours within the program’s area of practice. The residency program requires the participant to complete a minimum of 1,800 total program hours, including 300 educational hours that utilizes a blended delivery model for the curriculum which includes: self-study modules, journal clubs, case reviews, quarterly weekend intensives, and independent study and 1,500 patient-care clinic hours inclusive of 150 hours of 1:1 mentoring throughout the program and 200 hours of on the field athletic coverage. The resident will have 36/hours a week of patient care and will be paid full salary with benefits.
Admission Requirements:
A) All applicants must have successfully completed a CAPTE accredited physical therapy program
B) All applicants must hold a current Physical Therapy license in the state of New York and/or New Jersey
C) All applicants must maintain a current APTA membership for the duration of the program
D) All applicants must have current CPR certification
E) All applicants must submit a completed residency application
F) The SPEAR Sports Residency Program will require ONE of the following prerequisites:
      i. Certification as an Emergency Response for the Athlete by Cogent Steps LLC.  
      ii. Certification or licensure as an Emergency Medical Technician and/or a Paramedic 
      iv. Certification as a Certified Athletic Trainer by the National Athletic Trainers Association Board of
      Credentialing (NATABOC) in the past 10 years 
Additionally, the residency program is designed to prepare resident to have the knowledge to sit for the Sports Clinical Specialists examination. Each resident must complete all assigned didactic materials and examinations.
