Orthopedic Residency Program

Program Mission Statement:

The mission of Spear Orthopedic Residency is to provide a quality advanced curriculum to orthopedic physical therapists to guide them to achieve the level of an Orthopedic Clinical Specialist in critical analysis, patient management, communication, and professionalism to enhance patient care to the population served. The program is dedicated to guiding growth, continuous improvement, and strategic initiatives.

Program General Information:

The Spear Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residency Program is a one-year, full time, clinically based program to enhance the clinical reasoning and advance skills of the participant. The program offers a comprehensive curriculum that meets the minimum required hours within the program’s area of practice. The residency program requires the participant to complete a minimum of 1,800 total program hours, including 300 educational hours that utilizes a blended delivery model for the curriculum which includes: self-study modules, journal clubs, case reviews, quarterly weekend intensives, and independent study and 1,500 patient-care clinic hours inclusive of 150 hours of 1:1 mentoring throughout the program. The resident will have 36/hours a week of patient care.

Admission Requirements:

· All applicants must have successfully completed a CAPTE accredited physical therapy program.

· All applicants must hold a current Physical Therapy license in the state of New York and/or New Jersey.

· Required membership in the APTA and APTA Orthopedic Section.

· Commitment to completing all program requirements.

· Commitment to taking the OCS exam at the earliest eligibility.

 

Additionally, the residency program is designed to prepare residents to complete the ABPTS Orthopedic Certified Specialist (OCS) examination. Each resident must complete all assigned didactic material and examinations.
