Sofia earned her Doctor of Physical Therapy from University of Delaware, where she gained valuable clinical experience working in their state-of-the-art clinic as both a PT tech and student. During her time at Delaware, Sofia took part in leading the Mental Health Committee, organizing events, and writing newsletters for the PT department. She also received an award from the Physical Therapy Department for excellence in academics and performing arts. Sofia received her Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology, with concentration in Movement Science, and a minor in Psychology from Pennsylvania State University. Sofia has been dancing for over 20 years with experience in ballet, pointe, partnering, modern, contemporary, jazz, and musical theater. She attended a performing arts high school and continued to dance throughout her time at Penn State. Sofia also taught dance for several years, giving her a unique ability to work with patients, especially dancers, as she can adapt to different learning styles and provide specialized training programs. Having been injured as a dancer many times over the years, Sofia was able to experience how beneficial physical therapy was firsthand. However, her PT did not understand much of what dance entailed making the return to dance process more difficult. This is what ultimately lead her to pursue a career in performing arts physical therapy.
Sofia has clinical experience working with geriatrics, neurological, sport, and performing arts patient populations, although she seeks to specialize in performing arts rehabilitation. Sofia is passionate about incorporating cross-training into the performing arts community as she completed a strength and conditioning internship during her undergraduate studies at Rockland Peak Performance in New York. The knowledge she gained in biomechanics and movement, in both general and sport specific exercise, has given her an opportunity to educate dancers on injury prevention and the importance of cross-training in the dance field.
When Sofia has free time, you can find her dancing, working out at the gym, doing yoga or spending quality time with family, friends and her cat. She also enjoys reading and trying out new recipes and restaurants.
