Mariam earned her Clinical Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, after graduating with distinction from the University of the Sciences with a Bachelor’s in Health Science. During her time at Saint Joseph’s University, Mariam meticulously researched the benefits of exercise programs that included cognitive and motor dual task training for patients with stroke. Throughout her research, Mariam taught exercise classes to patients through Ageless Grace, a brain fitness program that encourages adults to exercise through creative play using neuroplasticity and their imagination to improve brain function in all lobes of the brain.
Mariam has strong outpatient experiences in neurologic and orthopedic rehabilitation, including experience with treating patients with musculoskeletal and neurological disorders, vestibular, return to sport, post-surgical and TMJ disorders. During her clinicals, she learned alongside her mentors, who were Orthopedic Clinical Specialists to treat patients of all ages including young athletes. She performed advanced manual techniques, and learned various treatment styles and types of exercise programs from her mentors, which have significantly benefited her patients.
In her neurologic clinical, she treated patients with neurologic, vestibular, and balance disorders using LSVT BIG, balance training, dual- tasking, high-intensity training and strength training to help her patients with movement disorders reach their goals and prevent falls. Her research mentor, who was a Neurologic Clinical Specialist, taught her the important principles of neuroplasticity, which Mariam thoughtfully includes in her exercise programs today.
Mariam believes that if her patients are not challenged, then they are not learning. She understands her patient’s needs and works with them individually, motivating them towards successfully achieving their goals. Mariam strongly believes in using clinical practice guidelines, reading up on the evidence, and delicately crafting interventions that are appropriate to her patient’s pain levels to push them outside of their comfort zone.
Alongside her clinical experiences, she is certified as a LSVT BIG clinician and an Ageless Grace Educator. Mariam believes in the importance of a patient-doctor relationship built on trust and empathy, while being committed to making a positive difference in the lives of those she serves through her strengths in innovative thinking, strong patient connections, and a dedication to staying current with best practices to provide excellent care. In her free time, Mariam is a coffee connoisseur, anthophile, enjoys spending time with loved ones, visiting nature and historical sites, and exploring new places.
