Hip Bursitis

Share:

Hip bursitis is defined by inflammation of the small, fluid-filled sacs that cushion the bones around the hip. This inflamed bursa puts pressure on the hip muscles resulting in pain. Generally, this inflammation is caused by prolonged postures of the hip in awkward positions, or generalized weakness of the hip causing increased pressure through the bursa. The pain is generally worse laying on that side as well.

Common Signs & Symptoms

  • Stiffness in the hips
  • Pain when moving the hips
  • Pain when applying pressure to the hip such as laying on your side
  • Pain when squatting or climbing stairs
  • Pain while walking or running
  • Swelling around the outside of the hip

How Will Physical and/or Occupational Therapy Help?

During a Physical/Occupational Therapy session, you will:

  • Restore mobility by performing passive motions with your therapist.
  • Reduce pain and swelling by learning how to modify daily activities that will irritate the hip. Your therapist will also treat you by using ice/heat, hands-on therapy, and taping of the hip.
  • Improve your strength, flexibility, and balance with personalized exercise plans designed by your therapist.
